The life and times of Jenny Holden: Beaver Trial Field Officer for the Scottish Wildlife Trust, freelance wildlife and travel writer, nature lover and novice shepherd.
I'm home in Cumbria at the moment and right now am enjoying a pint of local brew real ale with (left to right) my fiance Chris, Lauren my brother's girlfriend and Joe my brother. Oh it's nice to be home :-)
The Smali Flock now reside at Brenfield Estate, home of Argyll Trail Riding. They're very good at escaping from their own field but their equine neighbours don't seem to mind!
I worked a lot with sheep as a teenager: Joan Hadwin, a local shepherd, and her North Country Cheviots taught me an awful lot. I caught the Rare Breed bug from Jennie Hill who kindly let me tag after her on her farm and take her Shetlands, North Ronaldsays and Hebrideans into the show ring.
Our Shetland Sheep are registered with the Shetland Sheep Society. There is more information about this wonderful and ancient breed on the SSS website. "Smali" is the Old Norse word for "sheep".
